Yankees, Curtis Granderson Reunion? 3 Reasons Why It Could Work, 3 Reasons Why It Wouldn’t

With The Mets reportedly shopping both Curtis Granderson and Jay Bruce, recent rumors suggest that Granderson may be going to the Baltimore Orioles’; which would make sense for the O’s if veteran slugger Mark Trumbo isn’t returning to the team.

Granderson may not bring the same impact at this point of his career as much as a Cespedes will or current free agents Jose Bautista or Edwin Encarnacion. But Granderson would be a  cost effective outfielder for any team. There haven’t been any rumblings about a possible Yankee reunion, but for the sake of conversation, let’s explore the pros and cons that would be accompanied by a return to the Yankees.

3. Negative: His Age

Curtis Granderson has had an average MLB career in terms of accomplishments. His stats aren’t Hall of Fame worthy, but he’s never been a below average outfielder. However, he is aging. He’s 35 years old now and the Yankees are in the midst of getting younger.

However, this issue shouldn’t close out any possibility, as the Yankees are looking into signing a veteran power hitter according to many reports. It’s a negative based on the fact that the Yankees should continue this youth movement in my opinion.

3. Positive: Beloved By Fans

Granderson’s departure left a bad taste in many Yankee fans’ throat. Not only because he went to the crosstown rival, but he was really one of the beloved players on the Yankees’ team during his stay in the Bronx. Granderson’s classiness fits perfect with the Yankees’ mentality. Granderson would have no problem transitioning back into pinstripes in terms of environment.

2. Negative: Last Stay Ended On A Rough Note

One of the main reasons the Yankees’ let Granderson walk was because his last Yankee stay ended with an injury plagued season. It was reported at the time that the Yankees’ weren’t actively working to re-sign him, as they were preoccupied with the Robinson Cano sweepstakes. The Mets’ then swooped in and snagged Granderson on a 4 year, $60 million contract. Granderson would jokingly state, “A lot of people I’ve met in New York have always said that true New Yorkers are Met fans.”
Though Granderson was joking, the comment was not taken well by Yankee fans. However, all could be forgiven if the Yankees do acquire him from the Mets.

2. Postive: His Contract Isn’t Bad At All

While signing a free agent such as Jose Bautista or Edwin Encarnacion could definitely fulfill the Yankees’ desires for power in the lineup, it will take some real commitment from the team. Granderson’s contract has two more years before expiration and will only require $31 million from the team. That’s a bargain in today’s current market.

1. Negative: Could Take Away Spot For Another Rookie

One problem that the Yankees will have if they trade for Granderson is that they will add to an already crowded outfield. Though, this isn’t the worse problem to have, Granderson would clog up a spot that could be preserved for another young rookie that the Yankees’ may want to give a shot.

However, this isn’t just a negative for a potential Granderson trade, but a negative for any major hitter the Yankees’ sign. A problem solver would be moving either Jacoby Ellsbury or Brett Gardner via trade if possible. One positive in the negative though, is that Granderson would only occupy that spot for 2 years.

1. Positive: Could Be A Guarantee 30+ Homer Hitter

Though the Grandy-man hasn’t made many headlines for the Mets’ last season, he quietly smacked 30 homeruns for the 2016 campaign. That number could easily translate to 40 at Yankee Stadium if he’s at his best, which has been proven in the past. Even if Granderson has taken a few step backs since then, he could still be a guaranteed 30+ homerun guy, which is a good bargain for the money he will be getting paid.
