In a match up between the number one team in the world, Germany, and number two, USA, it was a tale of two soccer titans. The young, high scoring Germany against the very experienced very dangerous USA. Would Germany continue their dominance in this world cup, or would the USA continue their streak of 423 minutes of scoreless soccer?

The first half started with a high paced American attack in which the USA tested Germany’s goalie many times, but with no success. Germany failed to get their offense going in the first half, not giving Hope Solo, the U.S. goalie, much of a test. After 45 minutes the score tied 0-0.

The second half started with the Germans having a very good offensive attack, testing Solo and the very skilled American defense. The USA gave up a penalty kick in which German striker Sacic missed just left. After that, the very physical American defense stood tall and deflated any attack the Germans started.

The game was tied until the 69th minute when Alex Morgan was brought down in the box and a penalty kick was given. Captain Carli Lloyd was called upon to take it, in which she buried it into the right side of the net to put the Americans up 1-0. After that, the Germans looked well beat. The USA ended up scoring a beautiful goal by Kelly O’Hara in the 84th minute. Lloyd gave a beautiful cross net pass to O’Hara who just tapped it with her leg to put the USA up 2-0. That was the knockout punch the USA needed to beat Germany.

After that goal, U.S. played a game of keep away until that final whistle. The USA continues on to the World Cup final for the second time in a row, and will face the winner of the Japan vs England game. Germany will take on the loser of that same game for third place.

In the last world cup, U.S. lost to Japan in penalty kicks. Sunday night, when the finals takes place, you may see a rematch in which the Americans want justice.
