As first reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Anthony Johnson has elected to come out of retirement and compete in the Heavyweight division. The scheduled return of Johnson is rumored for March of 2020.
If Johnson were to fight a ranked opponent, he’d need a beneficial fight to re-launch his MMA return. Fighters such as Aleksei Oleinik and Tai Tuvasa come to mind as potential suitors.
Towards the top 10 of the division, Johnson could foresee a fight against Cain Velasquez, Alexander Volkov, or even Alistair Overeem. If Johnson were to walk away with a debut victory against one of the aforementioned names, it could be a boost.
Inching into the top 5, Johnson may eventually earn a shot against one of the best in the division. With Derrick Lewis, Francis Ngannou, Curtis Blaydes, Junior Dos Santos, and Daniel Cormier molding out the Heavyweights, a win in this range would shock the MMA world.
Regardless, fans around the MMA community are excited to have Anthony Johnson back, as he looks to move up the Heavyweight division and make it his proving grounds.
