Washington Capitals Secure Stanley Cup

The Washington Capitals have won the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history with a 4-3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights.

The deciding game was close throughout, with a scoreless first period setting the scene for a crazy second. Five goals and one brawl later, the Golden Knights had a 3-2 lead heading into the third period, but goals from Devante Smith-Pelly and Lars Eller in the eventually clinched it for the Capitals.

The long wait is over not only for the franchise, but perhaps one of the greatest players in franchise history in Alex Ovechkin. The face of the franchise since 2005 has suffered several playoff heartbreaks in years prior, and had never made it to even the Conference Finals before this season. After a series in which he had a point in every game, Ovechkin finally gets to lift the trophy that evaded him, and Washington for so long.
