Warriors to pursue Anderson Varejao?

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly considering a pursuit of Portland Trail Blazers center Anderson Varejao. The Blazers acquired Varejao on Thursday and plan on buying him out.

“I have not been notified of that but it makes perfect sense, right?” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said when asked about the reports. “I don’t even know, am I allowed to even mention his name? I can get fined by the NBA. I don’t even know what the rule is.”

Varejao, a 12 year pro, is averaging 2.6 PPG, 2.9 RPG, and 0.6 APG. He ranks third in offensive rebounds (1,479), fifth in defensive rebounds (2,955), fifth in total rebounds (4,434), seventh in games played, tied for seventh in blocks (397) and eighth in steals (529) in Cleveland Cavilers history.

There are a few reasons as to why the Warriors would be interested in adding Varejao. He’s a well respected player, both by management and teammates. He would add experience to their bench and would mesh well with the team they have there in Oakland.

Marc Stein of ESPN is also reporting that the San Antonio Spurs, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Dallas Mavericks are also interested in adding the 33 year old big man. It is also with noting that the Warriors would need to clear a roster spot if they do indeed sign Varejao.
