UNC ups Roy Williams’ contract 2 years

In the middle of an NCAA investigation that could harbor one of the most storied programs in college basketball (EVER), the University of North Carolina has opted to extend Roy Williams’ contract through the 2019-20 season. Their reason for doing this is what we all want to know. It’s very possible that the move is to fight back against negative recruiting, which has occurred over the past few years against the university.

Williams’ new deal for the 2019-20 season includes a raise and more incentives. His base salary next season will be $408,169, extending to $595,409 in the final year. There is also a deferred compensation that starts at just more than $1.5 mill next year and goes up to $1.75 mill by the end of the contract. The incentives include: $75,000 for every annual A.P.R score that is 975 or better; $25,000 for each NCAA tournament appearance; $100,000 for winning one NCAA tournament game; $150,000 each time UNC reaches a Sweet 16; $200,000 each time UNC reaches the Elite Eight, and another $200,000 if the team makes the Final Four; and $250,000 if UNC wins a national title under Williams.

The university has Williams for a 13th season in the fall. His career record is 750-202, and a 332-101 mark at Carolina; following his records, school AD Bubba Cunningham said, “We are certainly pleased to extend coach Williams’ contract for two years beyond what was already in place…”

It should be a very eventful season. (Hooray more sweater vests and sweats).
