On Sunday, it was reported by Ali Abdelaziz, the manager of the Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, that the UFC is in the process of booking a superfight between Nurmagomedov and former two-division champion Georges St-Pierre. These rumors sparked up when St-Pierre issued a challenge to the winner of Nurmagomedov vs Conor McGregor.
St-Pierre is known for giving the Welterweight division trouble after defending the championship multiple times. In 2013, the veteran vacated the belt, which he then earned back in 2017 against Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping before vacating once again, but this time due to ulcerative colitis.
Khabib Nurmagomedov challenged St-Pierre after defeating Al Iaquinta at UFC 223 in April to win the vacant Lightweight title, but due to St-Pierre not being medically fit to compete, he was forced to decline.
Nurmagomedov is coming off a win over McGregor, as his undefeated reign as Lightweight Champion continues. St-Pierre is an amazing striker and wrestler who has overcome legends such as Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, BJ Penn and others. Title fight or not, a fight between Nurmagomedov and St-Pierre would generate more than enough revenue for the UFC, and would truly put a test to Nurmagomedov’s undefeated streak.
An announcement could take place in the near future, but there is reason to believe that a bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Georges St-Pierre will take place.
