The news broke on Wednesday afternoon that the UFC has verbally agreed to Jon Jones vs Thiago Santos for the Light Heavyweight Championship for UFC 239. In addition, the UFC is scheduling a fight between Amanda Nunes and Holly Holm for the Women’s Bantamweight Championship. UFC 239 will be on July 6th in Las Vegas.
The last time Jones fought was in March, where he defeated Anthony Smith in a one-sided unanimous decision victory. Santos has been tearing apart the Light Heavyweight division, and with a recent win over Jan Blachowitz, it was only a matter of time before this fight was made official.
The last time Nunes fought, she defeated Cris Cyborg for the UFC Featherweight Championship in December. In result, she became the first female double champion in UFC history. On the other hand, Holm most recently defeated Megan Anderson by decision last summer, and signed a new deal to remain with the UFC.
If Nunes were to defeat Holm, then she would become the first woman to defeat Holm, Cyborg, Valentina Schevchenko, Ronda Rousey, and Miesha Tate.
