Tom Brady, Roger Goodell to Appear in NYC Court
There had been some reports Monday that Brady might try to attend the hearing by phone, but the plan was always for Brady to appear in person, as the judge ordered. The goal is to work together to reach an agreement quickly rather than waiting on the courts to make a final call, per Jonathan Stempel, where he is also trying to calm the obvious “uneasiness” between them.
The plan is to decide whether the parties may submit court documents under seal or whether those documents might be made public, including the transcript of Brady’s June appeal hearing with Goodell. If they are made public, they would reveal the full extent of the conversation, involving the cell phone the league claims Brady destroyed after league investigators asked him for it, but many argue that earlier cases involving Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson had sealed documents in their case, with more extreme circumstances.
Brady posted on his well-known Facebook rant: “I authorized the NFLPA to make a settlement offer to the NFL so that we could avoid going to court and put this inconsequential issue behind us as we move forward into this season, the discipline was upheld without any counter offer.”
Although many think that Brady is doomed, The Patriots want a final answer before Sept. 4, which would make Brady available for Week 1 if the suspension is lifted. However, if not lifted, he won’t be eligible to return until Week 6 against the Indianapolis Colts due to the team’s early bye week.
