Things to Watch: Tim Tebow Signing with Mets

The New York Mets made the most media covered minor league signing on Thursday when they signed quarterback, excuse me, outfielder Tim Tebow.

Tebow began pursuing a baseball career back in August and showcased for 28/30 MLB teams on August 30th. This move sure has had it’s fair share of breakdown, and that’s what we’re doing today. Here are some things to watch now that Tebow signed:

Believe it or not, there is absolutely no risk in signing Tim Tebow, as Atlanta Braves GM John Coppolella said on Tuesday. Tell me one thing that makes you think “oh boy, that Tebow guy isn’t someone we should get.”

Is it him being a proud Christian? I wouldn’t think so. His throwing arm? His arm was fine during the showcase. How about his hitting performance? He went 8 for 19 (.421) with three strike outs and two doubles against live pitching. I’m not saying he’s the next Babe Ruth, but you can excuse the Mets if they want to take a chance on a guy who can throw, hit, and run, put him in the Arizona Fall League, and see how he progresses.

I just gave him some nice props. However, there’s one thing I didn’t mention with Tebow and that’s fielding. His throwing arm is fine, but his routes to the ball and his reads are sporadic at best. We also have to remember that, well, it’s Time Tebow

You’re going to get a lot of media coverage. Some good, some bad. Also, let’s not forget that he’s 29. I know I said there’s no risk, and his age really isn’t a risk because you never know how long someone will play, but it’s still something to watch for.

One more thing to consider is that Tebow faced two retired pitchers during his showcase. Now, he’ll have to face pitchers who have continually played baseball their whole lives and who’s stuff is actually pretty lively.

Those are things to watch with Tim Tebow. Can he make a major league roster? Sure. But will he? That’s the million dollar question.
