The Latest on José Fernandez

Marlins ace Jose Fernandez has been one of the hotter names this offseason, simply because of how outspoken he was about the team’s recent moves. It is believed that the the Marlins are “at peace” with the fact that Fernandez will no longer be on the roster after the 2018 season.

What complaints could Fernandez have? For one, he did not approve of the recent trades this past season, as the team sent out names such as Dan Haren, Mat Latos and even Michael Morse. Another reason Fernandez is unhappy is because the Marlins replaced pitching coach Chuck Fernandez with Juan Nieve.

What does all this indicate? The Marlins recently acquired Wei-Yen Chen, who has the option to opt out after two seasons. With pitchers like Chen and Fernandez locked up until 2018, look for the Marlins to aim to be contenders in the NL within that time frame.

Fernandez won NL rookie of the year in 2013, and since then has 19 starts with a 2.71 ERA. Fernandez will look to make a name for himself this upcoming season, and Marlin fans should at least be excited until 2018.
