The Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Controversy

Leading up to the season, the Dallas Cowboys were ready to contend in the NFC East, after an underwhelming season last year on the back of Tony Romo.  During the preseason of 2016, Romo suffered yet another injury, sidelining him for several weeks. The question is when Romo comes back from his injury, should he be the starting quarterback?

In 5 games last season, Romo threw for 884 yards, 5 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, with a passer rating of 79.4. The reason for Romo not playing for most of the season was due to a collarbone fracture, which he suffered twice last season. In the games that Romo did play, he did not look good, he threw more interceptions than touchdowns.

In all the starts we have seen from Dak Prescott this season, he has thrown for 1,486 yards, 7 touchdowns, 1 interception, with a passer rating of 103.9. Coming out of Mississippi State, Prescott was talked about to be a late-round quarterback that has the potential to be a franchise quarterback.

Out of everyone in the 2015 quarterback draft class, he did not put up the best numbers, but he was solid coming out of college for a later pick.

When the news came out that Romo was injured, a lot of people thought the Cowboys were going to slump without him and with a rookie quarterback starting. After all, the Cowboys did prove that their offense was incapable of putting up points without Romo on the field.

While Romo being hurt was a blow to the team, rookie quarterback Dak Prescott took it as a chance to showcase his skills and show why he is the next Dallas Cowboys quarterback. Prescott did not disappoint one bit, he showcased that he has a great arm, he has accurate throwing power and is poised in the pocket.

Even though Prescott has been amazing since getting the starting job, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told the media on several occasions that the Cowboys are still Romo’s team and that when he is 100 percent healed from his injury, he will he starting over Prescott.

This is still mostly head coach Jason Garrett’s decision at the end of the day, but he will most likely want to start Romo, due to the fact that he has done so much for the team.

The news came out on Sunday that the team might be pushing back Romo’s return to the field, which raises a couple of questions within the team. The team has to think about long-term success right here and go with the hot hand, rather than sticking with a guy that has carried the team for many years.

In my opinion, the team should do what is right and ride with Prescott since he has been on a roll ever since taking over for Romo. He was impressive in Sunday’s win over the Green Bay Packers, and it proves that he is legit and is going to be the next great Cowboys quarterback.

If the team stays with Prescott, what does that mean for Romo and his long-term future with the team? It more likely that he’ll have to deal with being the backup and potentially taking a pay cut to be on the team. If he does not take the pay cut, the team will more than likely trade him.
