Steven Jackson Signs With New England

After losing Dion Lewis and LeGarrette Blount to season ending injuries, New England Patriots had a big hole at running back. The team already signed Montee Ball to the practice squad, and looks like the team is adding more depth at running back. After a few days of reports, Steven Jackson and the team made it official, the team  signed him to a one year deal. Jackson spent last season with Atlanta Falcons, and spent this offseason with really no interest from other teams as a free agent until Patriots signed him today.

In 15 games with Falcons, Jackson rushed for 707 yards, 6 touchdowns, in 190 attempts. The team finished 6-10  third in the NFC South and missing the playoffs. Jackson played a good role in Falcons offense, but he did not run for the 1000 yards that the team was expecting him to do. Running for six touchdowns is not bad for a guy like Jackson. The team was expecting more out of him when the team signed him in free agency. Jackson never rushed for 1000 yards in the two seasons with the team.

Even though Jackson was not the same with Falcons, he is still a good running back. Jackson is a running back that can run for 1000 yards every season, as long as he is healthy. He proved that with St Louis Rams when he ran for 1000 yards for eight straight seasons. Jackson is not the same franchise running back he once was, but give him the right role in the right offense and he can put up over 1000 rushing yards and over 6 touchdowns. Jackson is more of a power running back then a speed running back, so he uses his power to his advantage when finding holes in defenses and making defenders miss when trying to tackle him.

New England is getting a good power running back, who can still produce good numbers. Another good thing is Jackson is still in his early 30s. Being on a playoff team like New England, will motivate him to become a productive running back. The team is desperate for running back help. It is a gamble signing Jackson, if it does work out the team will have a great power running back, in Jackson who will make the team a threat in the playoffs. If anyone can motivate Jackson to get back to his old form its Bill Belichick.

In Jackson side of things, it works out perfectly waiting for a team to pick him up and it happens to be the defending Super Bowl champions. Now that Jackson has a great chance of winning the Super Bowl, and already is on a playoff team for the first time in his twelve year career. Jackson now has to prove it on the field, that he is still the same old 1000 yard rushing per season back that we saw from him when he was with the Rams. If he can do that, it will all be worth it ending with him hopefully getting a Super Bowl ring.
