Sanchez Suffers Strained Right Bicep vs Orioles

The New York Yankees have invested their future into a handful of upcoming stars, and one of those young studs happens to be catcher Gary Sanchez. In a loss against the Orioles, Sanchez would strain his right bicep after fouling off a 3-2 fastball.

Sanchez would proceed to take a practice swing outside of the batters box, which lead to him being escorted to the locker room as soon as he felt discomfort. Replacing Sanchez for the remainder of the game would be Austin Romine. The Yankees now sit at a record of 1-4 to start the season.

Sanchez was one of the hottest hitters in the 2016-17 season, slamming 20 home runs in 201 at-bats. Sanchez was seen as the future at the catcher position for the Bombers, which is primarily why the franchise let veteran Brian McCann sign with the Houston Astros. In four games this season, Sanchez has only managed to rack in three hits, with one being a dinger.

What does this mean for Sanchez? With mild strains, most doctors would suggest that Sanchez should be good to go within a few days. More severe strains can cause athletes to miss up to several weeks. For Sanchez? The Yankees have confirmed that he will be placed within the 10-day DL, and then go from there.

In the meantime, Austin Romine will remain behind the plate during Sanchez’s absence. In 2016, Romine managed to bat .242 in 165 plate appearances. Despite Sanchez’s slow start to his 2017 campaign, expect for the 24-year old to be fixated into the lineup by next week.
