It has been reported that the New Orleans Saints have signed running back Alvin Kamara to a five-year, $75 million extension. Kamara, who was on the final year of his rookie contract, had been absent from camp in hopes of a new deal.
Prior to the deal, Kamara was projected to make $2.13 million as a base salary this season. While Latavius Murray has proven to be a serviceable back over the last six seasons, the gap between him and Kamara is clear.
Across his first three NFL seasons, Kamara has totaled 2,408 rushing yards and 37 total touchdowns. He has recorded 81 receptions in each respective season en route to be known as one of the best pass-catching running backs in the NFL.
Just recently, the Cincinnati Bengals committed to running back Joe Mixon with a four-year, $48 million extension. In addition, the Minnesota Vikings have signed Dalvin Cook to their own five-year deal. Still, the Saints were entering the 2020 season with the sixth-least amount of cap space.
While New Orleans doesn’t have other immediate contracts to address, both cornerback Marshon Lattimore and offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk are scheduled to become free agents following the 2022 season.
