Ryan Fitzpatrick Ready To End Contract Talks?

According to a report from the New York Daily News, it looks like free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is ready to end the offseason contract talks. The Daily News reported that Fitzpatrick is ready to take a one year deal from the New York Jets worth $12 million dollars. Fitzpatrick and the team have been in contract talks all offseason, but both sides have not come to agreement on a new deal.

Last season in 16 games, he threw for 3,905 yards, 31 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, with a passer rating of 88.0. Signing as a free agent last offseason, despite being second on the depth chart at the start of training camp, Fitzpatrick filled in for starting quarterback Geno Smith who suffered a broken jaw during an altercation with linebacker Ik Enemkpali.

Fitzpatrick made the most of this chance as starting quarterback and ran with it, producing solid numbers for the Jets. By the time Smith was one hundred percent, the team was set with him at quarterback.  The team was close to clinching a playoff spot, only to miss it during week 17, losing to the Buffalo Bills.

After a long offseason of contract talks, the team should be happy to hear that he is willing to take a one year deal, even if it is at $ 12 million dollars. It makes sense for the team to close the deal now with Fitzpatrick, and give him the deal that he has been looking for now that the quarterback is willing to take a one year deal.

On the Fitzpatrick side of things, it is smart of him to be willing to take a one year deal. It proves that he wants to prove that last season was not just a fluke, and that he can put up that kind of numbers season after season.  If he can get a one year deal and produce the same numbers he did last season, expect him to cash in next offseason, getting the multi-year million dollar contract that he wanted at the start of free agency.

According to a report that just came out Thursday, the team is not willing to give him the one year deal that he is asking for. It is not a smart move by the team, the quarterback that helped your team almost make the playoffs last season is willing to take a one year deal and they are not taking it. Fitzpatrick is a big part of the team’s offense, so the team needs to get this deal done now and just give him the one year deal that he is asking for.
