Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder agreed to a new deal to keep him in Oklahoma City, the deal is for 3 years worth 85.7 million dollars.  Westbrook was set to become a free agent next offseason, now with the new deal, Westbrook has a chance to option to test the free agent in 2018.

Last season in 80 games, Westbrook averaged 23.5 points per game,10.4 assist per game, and 7.8 rebounds per game. Alongside Kevin Durant, Westbrook was a big part of the team’s success last season putting up amazing numbers helping the team make it all the way to the Western Conference Finals only to lose to the Golden State Warriors in 7 games.

The team must be happy that both sides got a deal done now, other than waiting and having the situation go from bad to worse.  With Westbrook now resigned, the team is keeping one major core piece of what made the team successful last season. The money will not be a problem for the team since Westbrook has proven to be an all-star type of player.

It is obvious that Westbrook will be the sole number one option of the team with Durant signing with another team, with the way he has been playing the past few years he will have no problem with the pressure of being the number one option.

Westbrook is also taking a chance here of potentially  entering the 2018 free agency market, instead of entering the 2017 free agency market. Either way, Westbrook will be getting a big time payday once the 2018 offseason comes around

With Westbrook now back and signed to a new deal, the team now have time to improve the team to make sure that the team is a title contender this upcoming season. While Westbrook is leading the team, he will have a  supporting cast with players like Victor Oladipo and Steven Adams.

After losing Durant to the  Warriors due to free agency, a top priority of the team this offseason was signing Westbrook to a new deal due to the fact that he was going to be a free agent next offseason and the team did just that.

On the Westbrook side of things, it was the smart thing for him to sign a new deal while getting a good amount of money with the team that was one win away from the NBA Finals just last season.

If the team improves the bench and fixes the holes on the team, the Thunder will be a playoff team that can make some noise this upcoming season.
