Robert Griffin III Done In Washington
After getting demoted to the third string quarterback, it looks like the experiment is over in Washington. The team has announced that they have cut quarterback Robert Griffin III. The team drafted Griffin in the first round of the 2012 draft.
Griffin did not step on the field last season. During the 2014 season in 9 games played, Griffin threw for 1,694 yards, 4 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, with a passer rating of 86.9. Griffin also ran for 176 yards in 38 attempts, only getting himself 1 rushing touchdown.
It started out well in his rookie year, taking the league by storm, leading the team to the playoffs. Griffin produced good numbers in his rookie season. Everyone thought that Griffin was going to be the next franchise quarterback for the Redskins.
It all went downhill during the 2014 season, being outplayed by Colt McCoy and current starting quarterback Kirk Cousins. Leading up to the 2015 season, Griffin was the favorite to win the starting job. That was until an injury during week two of the preseason, when he suffered a concussion. This left the door wide open for Cousins to be named the starting quarterback of the Washington Redskins.
Washington freed a lot of cap space with this move getting rid of Griffin, and it was not working out. It was clear since the start of last season that the team was going to move on from him. It was just a matter of when it was going to happen. With his massive contract off the books, the team now has more cap space to spend this offseason to make the team stronger.
On Griffin’s side of things, it is time for a change. It was clear that he needed a new start with a new franchise. Somewhere where he could step right in and become the starting quarterback right away. Even though he just went through all that mess this past season, Griffin is still a really good duel threat quarterback.
One team that should be a favorite to sign Griffin now that he is a free agent is the Houston Texans. The team desperately needs a quarterback right away, if they want to be a competitive playoff contending team. The team already has the defense and receivers to become a threat, and Griffin could be the final piece of the playoff puzzle in Houston. Griffin spent his college playing days at Baylor, which is in Texas and spent part of his childhood in the state.
This could be a homecoming for Griffin. He could also be a good fit in the offensive system that the team runs. Other teams that could be in the running are the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers. Maybe the Dallas Cowboys will have an interest if Jerry Jones is willing to take a risk on Griffin.
