After going unsigned to begin the 2019-20 NBA season, J.R. Smith will now have the opportunity to win an NBA Championship. On Monday, it was reported that the Los Angeles Lakers are expected to Smith to a deal before the transaction window closes. Smith last played on November 19th, 2018 for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In 11 games last season, Smith averaged 6.7 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. With Smith signing with Los Angeles, he will be reunited with a familiar teammate in LeBron James.
The rumors between Smith and the Lakers have been ongoing all season. With Avery Bradley announcing that he will not be playing in the NBA’s restart period in Orlando, Smith became a leading candidate to be signed. The team also considered the idea of adding Dion Waiters to the roster.
