Report: Former Phins Coach Joe Philbin wanted Ryan Tannehill out of Miami

The Miami Herald reports that former Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin wanted to dump quarterback Ryan Tannehill as early as 2014, but was vetoed by general manager Dennis Hickey.

According to the report, the whole thing between the two began in 2013 when Philbin had a falling out with then-GM Jeff Ireland. Owner Stephen Ross decided to fix things by firing Ireland and there was a belief within the team that offensive coordinator Mike Sherman would on his way out next. Philbin vouched for Sherman, blaming the offensive troubles on Tannehill.

Philbin planned to fix this problem by drafting Derek Carr in the 2014 Draft and have Carr replace Tannehill. They had only one pick (19th) before the Raiders took him with the 35th overall pick, but obviously they didn’t use it on Carr. They took offensive lineman Ja’Wuan James with that 19th pick and wide receiver Jarvis Landry with their second round pick.

So, in layman’s terms, Philbin was stuck with a QB he didn’t want. Hickey drafted a lineman and a WR to help give Tannehill more protection and an extra weapon. Still, Philbin didn’t want Tannehill, and even though Tannehill didn’t struggle in 2014, he did in 2015.

We all know the hype that surrounded the Phins at the beginning of the 2015 season. They had signed that monster defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh to a huge $114 Million contract. They were expected to go far. Instead, they struggled. When Tannehill threw five picks in four games, a change was obviously needed and Philbin was fired.
