Recap: The Yankee/Red Sox Rivalry Lives On
The Yankees picked up a much needed win against their ultimate rival, the Boston Red Sox. The final was 3-2. Outfielder Aaron Hicks helped the Yankees cause by popping his first homerun of the season and his very first in Yankee pinstripes.
Brian McCann and Dustin Ackley drove in the other two runs. The win is bittersweet for the Yankees. First, the Yankees’ learned that CC Sabathia will be spending time on the 15-day DL due to a strained groin.
This is is bad news for the Yankees as CC Sabathia has pitched like his old self since the beginning of the season. Hopefully, this doesn’t deter his success.
Jacoby Ellsbury also left the game after reportedly injuring his leg after stealing a base. He will be undergoing an MRI on Saturday.
On the Red Sox side, they were able to at least celebrate a David Ortiz milestone as he hit a 2-run homer that would be the Red Sox only supply of run and Big Papi’s 510th career homerun.
With that homer, Ortiz passed Gary Sheffield on the all time home run leader board. He also tied Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski for the second most home runs in a Red Sox uniform at 452.
David Ortiz was also ejected in the 9th inning after arguing an extremely low ball that was called a strike. The umpire must have believed that Ortiz’s bat crossed the plate on the check swing by the looks of it.
I personally wouldn’t say so. However, the argument reminded us all of how intense these Yankee-Red Sox games still can be, which is always fun to watch.
