The premier league title race between Liverpool and Manchester City has been heating up as of late. City have retaken the lead in goal difference, while Liverpool have a game at hand, which gives them the advantage. Psychologically though, the advantage is to City. They have beaten Liverpool recently to keep the title race alive and Liverpool have dropped a few points here and there.
Manchester United on the other hand are pretty much out of the title race, but their goal of achieving Champions League football next season is real. Their only loss under Ole Solskjaer comes against PSG in the Champions League. Fans have been asking for Solskjaer to become permanent manager, and with a win against Liverpool, that could be the last point on the resume he needs to earn the job.
The Rivalry
In English football, there is no bigger rivalry than that of Manchester United and Liverpool. In their history, United has 88 wins, Liverpool has 76, and the other 65 games have been draws. History shows that United hold the advantage, but they will need more than that if they want to beat this side. It has been a few years since Liverpool made a legitimate run at the title, and this year, they are right in the thick of the race.
Players to Watch
Sadio Mané- Liverpool
Sadio Mané is an exceptional talent that can change a game and put it on his head. He could do some damage to the United back line. We all know how talented Mohamed Salah is, so he will be double-teamed constantly in this one. Luke Shaw will have the task of marking him, but he is one of the stronger fullbacks in the league. This gives Mané the opportunity to run at an aging Ashley Young, so this could be a game where he is the main man up top.
Fabinho- Liverpool
Fabinho has proven to be an excellent signing for Liverpool. The holding midfielder has been the anchor in midfield they have been missing since Steven Gerrard. If Paul Pogba stays pressed higher up the pitch, then Fabinho can push up into the space the Pogba has left behind him. This is a game where his skillset should shine through.
Ander Herrera- Manchester United
Ander Herrera has been a revelation for United as of late. He is a workhorse that makes the game difficult in a midfield. I see him creating issues and frustrations for Liverpool, perhaps antagonizing one or two of the players. Herrera enjoys getting into the heads of his opponents, which makes him the best player on the pitch.
Victor Lindelof- Manchester United
Victor Lindelof has transformed himself this season and has been a reliable option in the back for United. This is the type of game for him to cement himself as world class. He has come through clutch for United during this incredible run they’ve been on, so keeping a clean sheet tomorrow would be nothing short of remarkable.
Score Prediction
This is going to be a tight game that will down to the wire. Both sides have attacking mindsets, but can also defend. The Liverpool defense has been great all season, but with United back into top form, it could cause issues.
