Paul Makes Verbal Agreement With Clippers
According to Steve Kyler of Basketball Insiders, the Los Angeles Clippers and superstar point guard Chris Paul have agreed to a verbal long-term contract extension. The extension will be official once the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement is in effect.
The deal is reportedly worth more than $200 over the next five years, but Paul must decline his player option for the 2017-18 season first.
Verbal agreements are always tricky, because this can’t go on paper until July comes around. This allows for feelings to change, and even for other franchises to make potential pitches to Paul.
The Clippers next concern should be towards either J.J. Redick, who becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season, or Blake Griffin, who becomes a free agent after the 2017-18 season.
The Clippers have yet to visit the NBA finals, and keeping Chris Paul locked up for a long-term deal is a step in the right direction in my eyes.
