Osweiler Burning Holes in Pockets of Texans Organization 

In the offseason of 2015, the Houston Texans reached out to Broncos backup quarterback Brock Osweiler, inking him to four-year, $72 million deal. Eleven games into the regular season, Osweiler and the Texans find themselves at a 6-5 record. 

 While many may speculate that being in first place at this stage in the season is nothing to frown upon, just about everyone will agree that the Texans are much better on paper than they are on the field in 2016.

Is Osweiler as overrated and overpaid as he presents himself to be?

The Texans have been impressive at home this year, posting a 5-1 record during the 2016 regular season. In fact, 8 of Osweiler’s 12 touchdown passes have come from his home turf in Houston. Brock has been able to complete over 57% of his passes in each home game this season, but the problem is being consistent on the road. 

In his three games on the road this season against teams that made the playoffs in 2015 (New England, Denver, Minnesota), Osweiler has an average QBR of 58.9. To say that the young quarterback has issues against playoff teams would be an understatement, seeing that he is currently 2-4 against teams that are currently over .500 in 2016. 

Comparing Brock to opposing quarterbacks is one thing, but how about comparing him to his own play from 2015? In the 6 games Osweiler started last year, he posted a record of 5-2. While many may credit Denver’s defense as the main factor in those victories, he was enough of a game manager to lead Denver to multiple wins in the second half of the season. 

As of now, there is currently no quarterback that has started every game in 2016 that has less passing yards than Brock Osweiler. The Texans QB also finds himself tied in the league with the most interceptions (along with Ryan Fitzpatrick) with 13.

If you ask me, I don’t believe Brock is worth half of the contract the Texans offered him. The Broncos came out looking like geniuses, simply because their quarterback, Trevor Siemian, has outnumbered Osweiler in almost every category in the book. 

The Texans got desperate for a quarterback, and Osweiler looked like the most attractive name on the free agency market this past offseason. With that, the Texans will either look to trade Osweiler for a pick in an upcoming draft (unlikely), or they’ll look to ride it out, and hope the 26-year old can adjust to success over time.
