There is no doubt that Carmelo Anthony is one of the most beloved New York Knicks of all-time. The 38-year old has bounced around from team-to-team, with his most recent tenure being part of the disappointment that was the 2021-22 Los Angeles Lakers. While he is no longer capable of averaging over 20 points per game, he is still a valuable veteran piece to have off the bench on any team.
As free agency continues, rumors are now swirling that Knicks brass are considering bringing back Anthony for the first time since the 2017 season.
This wouldn’t be handing off the metaphorical key for Anthony to lead the way for the team, but he would be a valuable voice to have in the ears of young stars like RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and more.
Anthony knows what it means to be one of the most polarizing players for a big market team such as New York. This could have provided an invaluable asset to someone like Julius Randle, who finds himself feuding with fans at times. Anthony could also lend knowledge to Barrett, who appears to be the next in line to truly lead the franchise into the future. After the ugly breakup that entailed Phil Jackson during his last stay, Anthony deserves a chance to close out his career with proper respect in orange and blue. The Knicks need to prove that they aren’t that same organization.
If he’s truly ready to hang it up and use the 2022-23 season as a ‘farewell tour’, it’s time to bring the Syracuse alumni home.
