After the physical matchup between New York Giants Wide Receiver Odell Beckham Jr and Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman. NFL met today to determine the punishment for Beckham Jr. The league handed Beckham a one game suspension, which he will appeal. Beckham lost his cool, and was penalized with an ugly hit on Norman head. he was not ejected after the hit was delivered.
In 14 games this season, Beckham Jr had 91 receptions, 1,396 yards, and 13 touchdowns. Coming off a amazing rookie season, Beckham has had high expectations this season. He did not disappoint stats wise, catching for more then 1000 yards and double digit touchdowns. Beckham has shown in only his second season in the league that he can be a franchise receiver and one of the best receivers in the league. Beckham has been a big part of the Giants offense, helping the team stay in the NFC East Division race.
Before Sunday’s game, some people as Giants as favorites to knock off Panthers undefeated season. The matchup between Norman and Beckham Jr was already being talked about, since Norman has been one of the best corners in the league this season and Beckham Jr has been one of the best wide receivers in the league this season. What happened on the field during the game and after the game in the post game press conferences added more fuel to the fire to the hype that this game already had.
Both sides are to blame for this. Beckham took the shot at the helmet. It did look like he was defending himself from earlier scuffles but the helmet to helmet hit was out of line. Newman, however, did some stuff in the game that he has to take blame for. Norman during the press conferences has some words to say about Beckham, telling the media that Beckham should of been ejected from the game for what he did.
Beckham did do some things wrong, so it was obvious that the league was going to punish him for what he did on the field during the game. The league needed to take action for this, since it is something that should not happened in any game. The Giants are going to miss the number one target, seeing that Beckham does not win his appeal for his suspension which will be decided today or tomorrow.
Norman should be punished as well. Most likely the league will be talking to Norman about this later in the week. Maybe the league will punish Norman, by giving him a one game suspension the same discipline that Beckham has been given. If the league does not punish Norman, it will be the wrong move.
In the long run, Beckham has to learn how to control his emotions on the field. Stuff like this happens a lot players trying to get in your head. If this keeps happening, Beckham might get a reputation of someone who cant control his emotions. No team wants to deal with a player that does not know how to keep his emotions in check. No matter how good you are, what you do on and off the field as a young player is really important in the league. Giants better be hoping this will only be a one time deal, and not a repeat offense.
