NFL News And Updates.

With time ticking down until NFL free agency officially opens, there are a lot of rumors and headlines being made already and more are still more to come. Here are all of the news and updates from around the NFL on Wednesday, March 8th.
The first piece of NFL news is coming out of Dallas, after getting hurt in the preseason and the stellar play from rookie quarterback Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has no place on the team. Everyone was expecting him to be cut at some point. The question wasn’t a matter of it, but a matter of when. Today the team made it official and they will be cutting Romo on the first day of free agency.
In only 1 game this season due to an injury and being demoted to a backup quarterback, Romo threw for 29 yards, 1 touchdown and sported a passer rating of 134.4 competing for 3 out of the 4 passes in Week 17 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Before the season started, Romo was in line to be the starting quarterback. However, one hit in a preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks changed all of those plans and more.
On the Cowboys side of things, this was something that everyone saw coming from the team with the rising young quarterback in Prescott who will be entering his second season in the league.
Releasing Romo gives the team more flexibility in their cap space, even though it came at a price of letting go of one of the greatest players in team history. Though he has his share of haters, he’ll be remembered as a class act on and off the field.
On Romo’s side of the spectrum, this could prove to be a great thing for him in the long run. If he was willing to restructure his contract, he would be having to sit behind Prescott for the time being.
With him heading to free agency, he will have a chance to be a starting quarterback in this league since there are teams that could use him and he will be able to make a good amount of money along the way.
Look at teams like the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, and even the Kansas City Chiefs as three possible landing spot for Romo since all three teams are looking for upgrades at quarterback. All three teams have good defenses, so it is just a matter of who is willing to take a chance on Romo.
The second piece of NFL news is coming out of Buffalo. After rumors speculating all off-season about Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor potentially leaving the team, everyone was wondering if Taylor would don a Bills uniform for the 2017 season.
Today the team and Taylor seem to have answered that question with a yes, after both sides agreed to a new restructured contract for Taylor.
Instead of making the scheduled $27.5 million signing bonus, he will now be getting rumored to be a $7 million signing bonus and this new deal will drop his cap value from $16 million to just under $10 million.
In 16 games, Taylor threw for 3,023 yards, 17 touchdowns, 6 interceptions with a passer rating of 89.6. Taylor can also run with the ball as well as he rushed for 680 yards, which was good enough for 6 touchdowns on 95 attempts.
On the Bills side of things, the front office must be ecstatic that both sides were able to work out a restructured contract for Taylor. With this new restructured deal, the team now has a lot more flexibility in the cap room to sign some free agents to fill the holes and make the team stronger for next season.
As for Taylor, this proves that he is a team first player and is willing to take a major pay cut in order to create opportunity for pieces to surround him, giving his team their best shot to compete in the tough AFC East. around him to compete in the AFC East. The restructured contract still isn’t a bad one for a player of his value.
The last piece of NFL news comes out of San Fransisco. The 49ers are going through a culture change right now and it looks like they are looking to make moves in free agency this off-season.
The team and free agent wide receiver Pierre Garcon are expected to agree on a deal at some point, which would see Garcon be payed $16 million in the first year of his contract.
Last season with the Washington Redskins Garcon had 79 receptions, 1,041 receiving yards, and 3 touchdowns. Even though the team had a good offense, Garcon was effective but did not get a lot of chances to get them looking at the amount of touchdowns he caught. Someone who had more than 60 catches and over a thousand receiving yards should have more than 3 touchdowns.
On the 49ers’ side of things, this is a great start to their free agency. Last season, the team was dreadful at the wide receiver position. Signing someone like Garcon will help improve that wide receiving core drastically and be an effective target for whoever is under center for the 49ers come September.
Head Coach Kyle Shannahan was the offensive coordinator for the Redskins before joining the Atlanta Falcons coaching staff, so he knows what Garcon is all about and knows how to use him.
On Garcon side of the scale, this is a great thing for him. He has a chance to be a part of something that has the potential to be special in the 49ers. Even though it may take the team a few years, once the team hits its potential it should be scary and Garcon must want to come along for the ride.
