After being bought out by the Los Angeles Kings and signing with the Montreal Canadians, Ilya Kovalchuk had a unique start to his NHL comeback. On Sunday, Montreal traded Kovalchuk to Washington in exchange for a 2020 Third Round Pick. Montreal will retain 50 percent of Kovalchuk’s salary and cap hit.
After retiring from the NHL and going Russia to the KHL for five seasons, Kovalchuk signed a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Kings last season worth $6.25M annually, he totaled 14 points through his first 14 games. After inconsistent play, he was eventually bought out and signed with Montreal.
