The USC Trojans are expected to hire Cincinnati’s Mike Bohn to be the new Athletic Director. The move is expected to be announced on Monday.
Bohn has been the Athletic Director for Cincinnati for five years; he will replace Lynn Swann, who resigned in September after three years as Athletic Director for USC.
Bohn will take over a program that had a bribery scandal earlier this year. In January, former assistant basketball coach Tony Bland pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery in the college basketball recruiting probe. In March, multiple coaches and administrators were arrested for the roles in the bribery scandal. All admitted they took bribes to get kids to go to school at USC.
The first order of business will be to figure out what to do with football coach Clay Helton. USC is 5-4 and 4-2 in the Pac-12 South after their game against Oregon. The job security of Helton has been in question the last couple of seasons; it will be interesting to see what Bohn will do with him.
The track record of Bohn when it comes to hiring football coaches is not one to be remembered. While serving as the Athletic Director at Colorado from 2005-13, he hired Dan Hawkins (16-33), Jon Embree (4-21), and Mike MacIntrye (20-29). Once he took over at Cincinnati, Bohn hired Luke Fickell; the former Defensive Coordinator at Ohio State. Fickell is 21-11 in three seasons (6-1 so far this season) and is ranked 17th in the country.
It will be interesting to see what Bohn does with the USC head coach position. There are rumors out that are saying that Urban Meyer is USC’s top choice to be head coach. If USC can get Meyer, it would be an excellent hire for the program.
