Michigan offended by second half celebrating, ran up score vs. Rutgers
According to Michigan players, Rutgers’ players were celebrating down the tunnel at halftime, trailing 35-16 at the time, on their way to a 49-16 blowout loss to the Wolverines.
“They were just saying things like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s our time this second half,’ ‘we the comeback kids’ and ‘these guys can’t really finish games,’” Michigan all-purpose player Jabrill Peppers said. Head Coach Jim Harbaugh heard of this and decided to show them what’s good. “They were celebrating and he was upset about that,” Michigan cornerback Jourdan Lewis said. “He wanted to put points up on the board and make sure that we establish our dominance.”
It worked, if that was what was intended. Rutgers went scoreless in the second half and Quarterback Jake Ruddock kept on throwing it deep down the field. Even after De’Veon Smith punched into the endzone from four yards out to make it 41-16, Harbaugh went for two. “The chart says to do that,” Harbaugh said. “If that’s what the chart says, we went with that.”
This all could’ve been avoided if Rutgers had just waited a bit longer to celebrate. Not that it would’ve mattered, as Michigan has one of the best defenses in the nation, but it really could’ve been avoided. Michigan ended with 487 total yards, a season high, including 337 through the air.
Jourdan Lewis set the school record for most pass knockdowns in a single season with his 19th of the season. Both Michigan, 7-2, and Rutgers, 3-6, have three games left. This win should help Michigan move up in the CFB Rankings.
