The Miami Marlins are heading into 2016 with a new manager, new coaching staff, you name it. They will also be heading into the new season with a new pitcher. Reports indicate that the Fish have agreed to sign LHP Wei-Yin Chen to a five year deal worth a reported $80M
Chen, 30, pitched to a 3.34 ERA and 4.16 FIP over 191.1 innings with the Baltimore Orioles last season. He is a durable pitcher and a proven #2 pitcher in the rotation. The Marlins still have questions behind him and 23-year-old phenom Jose Fernandez, but this is a start and will solidify the top of the rotation.
The Marlins are still working on a multi-year extension for second baseman Dee Gordon. Gordon was acquired by the team last year in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Gordon hit .339 with four homers and 46 RBI last season. If Gordon can build off of that, he could contribute to a surprise Marlins team. Not to mention, Gordon has played for new skipper Don Mattingly before, so there shouldn’t be any difficulties adjusting.
