Marlins’ Jose Fernandez Passes Away in Boating Accident

Absolutely horrible news to report today as Miami Marlins phenom Jose Fernandez has passed away in a boating accident at the age of 24. Fernandez was actually supposed to start today, but the start was pushed back to make room for pitcher Adan Conley.

Fernandez was selected 14th overall by the Marlins in the 2011 draft. Fernandez has been regarded as one of the best young pitchers in the game. Trade rumors swirled around him during the offseason, but the Marlins held on to him due to his potential.

Fernandez was a beacon of life for the Cuban American community and the Miami community. Many believed that Fernandez was going to be one of the highest paid pitchers and highest regarded pitchers in the game. The Marlins have released a statement, saying that their thoughts and prayers are with the Fernandez family and that the game vs. the Atlanta Braves has been cancelled.

We here at The Athletes Hub send our thoughts to the Fernandez family, the Miami Marlins, and the Miami community.
