Leonard Signs Extension, Remains with Spurs
According to ESPN, the San Antonio Spurs will have nothing to fear when it comes to free agent forward Kawhi Leonard. The young and physical forward signed a maximum deal, worth five years and $90 mill. Although the contract isn’t official until next week, the salary is just about set in stone.
The Spurs have about 4-5 days potentially until they get close to signing Leonard to all that money, giving them limited time to chase other free agents they’ve been eyeing, such as LaMarcus Aldridge.
In the postseason, Leonard didn’t play like he was worth all this money, shooting only 29.6% in his last three playoff games. The Spurs did not seem to be too shaken by Leonard’s struggles, as they planned to make him their priority for what seemed like months.
Head coach Greg Popovich has been caught calling Leonard the “face of the franchise” on multiple occasions, but how will they plan for the future with Duncan and Parker’s age becoming a factor? It will be interesting to see what the Spurs have in store for fans around the nation.
