James has been as vocal as any modern athlete when comes to injustice and racial inequality. He has given passionate speeches on the stage of the ESPY’s while also encouraging teammates in both Cleveland and Miami to show support for both Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner. His social media pages are consistently used as a platform to express his thoughts on current struggles for equality.

I Promise

What James has done with his ‘I Promise’ school is nothing short of amazing. The school of 240 students is a beacon of hope in Akron, Ohio. The students are provided with free meals and transportation, including bicycles. Every student receives a scholarship to the University of Akron upon graduation. IPS also helps parents by providing free GED classes and job placement. While other athletes devote their time to the present, James has focused on strengthening the future.

The LeBron James Family Foundation

Through his foundation, James has has held an annual bike-a-thon to raise money for various causes. Furthermore, they have extended their scholarship efforts passed just those attending IPS. There is a plan in place to provide 2,300 scholarships starting in 2021. James has also used the foundation to preserve the memory of the athletes of the past.

In 2016, he donated $2.5 million to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture to support an exhibit on Muhammad Ali. The efforts of James to speak out on injustices of the present, invest in the leaders of the future, and preserve the icons of the past make him one of the most inspiring athletes of this generation.
