It was crazy scenes at the end of UFC 229. With all of the hype and build-up that was Conor McGregor vs Khabib Nurmagomedov for the UFC Lightweight Championship, we saw Khabib Nurmagomedov make McGregor submit with a rear naked chokehold. The aftermath was something that would make those in the WWE creative writing team get a hard on over, with Nurmagomedov throwing his mouthpiece and talking trash to McGregor’s team. The rest, is better seen than explained.
Not only did the new champion go ahead and jump the cage to attack the support crew of McGregor, but McGregor was attacked in the octagon by members of Nurmagomedov’s crew who had jumped the cage. This is not something that anyone would have thought was going to happen in the wildest dreams of the UFC.
Fans were in shock, the commentators were appalled by the actions of everyone involved and it took both security and police to break up both fights that were happening. The incredible part about this is what happened during the post fight announcements.
Khabib Nurmagomedov was announced as the winner of the fight thanks to a submission, but Dana White did not give him the Lightweight Championship. You can see as the Nurmagomedov camp is walking backstage, that there is no sign of a championship belt anywhere in that group.
The rumors that are already floating around online state that Nurmagomedev will be stripped of the championship, suspended for a period of time and another fight will happen to determine the champion. There is also a very good chance that we might not see another fight between the two thanks to the events that transpired tonight after the fight.
It’s understood that the actions of Nurmagomedev are likely in retaliation to the fact that McGregor attacked the bus carrying the crew of Nurmagomedev a while back in new York City.
This will be a major headline to follow over the the coming days and weeks, with the possibility of criminal charges being laid if McGregor and his crew want to pursue them. The only real things that are for certain coming out of UFC 229 here is that Nurmagomedev beat McGregor, and Nurmagomedev doesn’t currently have a championship belt to talk for itself.
