Julian Edelman Suffers Torn ACL

On Friday night, the New England Patriots went up against the Detroit Lions in their third preseason game. Although the Patriots went on to win the game, the biggest story coming out of the match-up was not good news. During the first quarter, wide receiver Julian Edelman suffered a knee injury during the course of a route, and had to be carted out of the stadium. An MRI confirmed today that Edelman has suffered a torn ACL and will be out for the regular season.

Last season, Edelman had 91 receptions, 1,106 receiving yards, and 3 touchdowns. Leading up to the 2016-17 campaign, the Patriots were expected to be Super Bowl contenders, and he was a huge reason for the teams success. Even though Edelman is not a receiver that normally reels in 10+ touchdowns per season, he is known for creating plays with his quick movement.

Normally finding himself compared to the likes of Wes Welker, the absence of Edelman will have an enormous impact on this offense. His pass-catching ability is something critics often overlook, considering he has been able to secure multiple 100-reception seasons over the years.

With this taking place just weeks before the regular season starts, this must be heartbreaking for fans. At this rate, all Edelman can seemingly do is rehab his injury, and make sure he is 100% ready within time.

With Edelman out, there are several guys on the roster that will be able to produce at the wide receiver position. Names such as Chris Hogan and Danny Amendola come to mind in terms of valuable slot receivers.

Will this offense be the same? Absolutely not. On the other hand, one area the Patriots thrive is using their depth in order to create success.
