Throughout the multiple attempts the UFC has made to book a fight between Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, Dana White has been unsuccessful in executing time and time again.

Nurmagomedov made his first defense as Lightweight Champion with a dominant performance against Conor McGregor at UFC 229.

Since then, no word has been spoken about a potential title defense against Tony Ferguson, who has been on an 11-fight win streak over the likes of Kevin Lee, Edson Barboza, Rafael Dos Anjos and Anthony Pettis among others. All of his former opponents have kept the division exciting, but Nurmagomedov vs Ferguson should be the next big fight to be made.

Ferguson was the interim Lightweight Champion last year before being stripped two days before his first defense against Nurmagomedov, who later defeated Al Iaquinta to become the new champion.

Both Ferguson and Nurmagomedov are in their primes, and could put on one of the best fights in recent years. As long as both can remain healthy, White and company need to compile a card around these two in the distant future.

Nurmagomedov has been suspended for 9 months, due to his post-fight altercation at UFC 229. With Nurmagomedov’s teammates suspended for a full year, Nurmagomedov is reportedly planning on holding out until his teammates return. If that is the case, then an interim belt may be on the line for Ferguson to grasp in 2019.

We are less than two months into the new year, and are contemplating one of the largest fights in UFC history. Even with additional barriers in place, there is still hope for Nurmagomedov vs Ferguson to take place.
