MMA fans around the globe love to speculate, but one question in the fighting world is how Brock Lesnar would fair in today’s era of the UFC. It is not a secret that Lesnar could have possibly surpassed his low expectations within his previous stint with the industry, but after being diagnosed with diverticulitis, he went on to miss over a year of fighting. Once returning, Lesnar would lose his UFC Heavyweight Championship match to Cain Velasquez, and then suffered defeat once again to the debuting Alistair Overeem before retiring from MMA.
After announcing his retirement, Lesnar went back to the place that initially molded him into the household name he is today: the WWE. After defeating Triple H, CM Punk, Big Show and the Undertaker at Wrestlemania 30, which would end the Undertaker’s undefeated streak of 21-0, Lesnar would face off against John Cena for the WWE World Championship, and defeat him in a dominant statement.
The 39-year old would be involved in small feuds during his time with the WWE as well, but after announcing that he was coming out of retirement for UFC 200 to face off against Mark Hunt, everyone knew that Lesnar wasn’t going to be the same. On the night of UFC 200, Lesnar would win by an eventual unanimous decision, only to have it ruled out, due to Lesnar reportedly taking estrogen prior to the bout.
Afterwards, Lesnar announced once again that he was retiring from the UFC, which leaves us to wonder how he would fair against other fighters today, had he not retired. The list of heavyweight fighters today in the heavyweight division are unbelievable, as you have individuals such as Junior Dos Santos, Fabricio Werdum, Alistair Overeem, Cain Velasquez, and reigning UFC Champion Stipe Miocic. All of the aforementioned names have earned their spot on the UFC roster, and I find it hard to believe that Lesnar could dominant any household names on the current roster.
Don’t get me wrong though, Lesnar has his flaws in the octagon, but what he also has is enough power to give names such as Randy Couture, Shane Carwin and Frank Mir a difficult time. To have Lesnar in the octagon again is a dream waiting to be granted, but the UFC is an unpredictable place.
If Lesnar were to return to the octagon and compete against those named, he ccould quite possibly lead an unstoppable mark to the UFC Heavyweight Championship, or he could fail in attempt to overcome the odds against him.
