How Volkov Compares to “Rocky” Version of Ivan Drago

Over the past weekend, the UFC held a Fight Pass only event in London. The main event scheduled was between former Heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum and rising star Alexander Volkov. This fight was likely to see who will challenge the winner of Stipe Miocic vs Daniel Cormier for the UFC Heavyweight title.

Despite having experience with submitting greats such as Alexander Emelianenko, Allistair Overeem, Cain Velasquez and Fedor Emelianenko, Werdum and his ground game were effective until he deferred to his stand up game against Volkov, who responded on multiple occasions before finishing off Werdum in the fourth round.

Back in the Rocky IV film, the plot was based off of Rocky having to do everything in his power to defeat the Russian, Ivan Drago, who was destroying everyone in his path in order to prove he is the best on the planet.

If we’re comparing this to reality, Volkov is essentially the Drago that defeated Werdum, who in turn could compare to the role of Creed. The nickname of Volkov even is “Drago”, but if Miocic can retain against Cormier in their upcoming bout, this theory would be broken rather quickly.

Miocic defeated Werdum on May 14th, 2016 at UFC 198 in the hometown of Werdum in Brazil. Since then, Miocic has become a version of “Rocky Balboa” for the UFC by defeating Junior Dos Santos, Alistair Overeem, and most recently, Francis Ngannou.

Despite already having three losses to his name, Volkov has not suffered a defeat in the UFC. He has defeated fighters including Timothy Johnson, Roy Nelson, Stefan Struve, and obviously Werdum as well.

Volkov has already stated that he wishes to challenge the winner of Miocic vs Cormier, and as long as nobody challenges and defeats Volkov, his sights will set on the belt.
