Saturday night is the long-awaited fight between undefeated boxers Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder for the WBC Heavyweight Championship. It will be a twelve-round fight where we will witness one streak end, while another leads to gold.
Wilder is known as the “Bronze Bomber” for a reason. He has defeated 40 opponents leading up to this point, with 39 ending by way of knockout.
The hype is real for Wilder, who has proven naysayers wrong in the past. Wilder has no fears from the looks of it, and this fight is his opportunity to be the first to hand Fury a loss. With a victory, Wilder may very well cement himself as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
Fury recently returned to the boxing world after an anti-doping incident transpired and his boxing license was suspended in result. In January, Fury announced on Twitter that he was re-applying his boxing license through the British Boxing Board of Control and that he signed a multi-year deal with Frank Warren’s Queensbury Promotions. He intended to fight three times before the end of the year.
Fury came through with his promise to fight three times, as he defeated Sefer Seferi on June 9th, and then overcame Francesco Pianeta on August 18th.
Wilder has defended the title several times, and if successful, he’ll be close to passing reigns held by boxing legends. In combined reigns for the title, Muhammad Ali defended the belt 19 times, Larry Holmes 16, Lennox Lewis 14, Vitali Klitschko 10, and Mike Tyson had 9 defenses. Wilder is currently holds 7 combined title defenses. With more of a legacy story on the line, Wilder has far more to lose in this bout.
Fury had a layoff from boxing, and with his fights against Seferi and Pianeta, he has proven that the layoff had no effect. The question suddenly becomes whether Wilder can make it twelve rounds, as Fury holds superior conditioning.
This fight is expected to break records and go down as a potential classic. It has become obvious that Wilder and Fury aren’t friends, and that can be seen through the several press conferences leading up to Saturday. The Staples Center is going to be jam packed for a night that the fans will not forget.
