FIFA Looking To Expand The World cup

One of the biggest sports’ stories as of late has been about the World Cup of Soccer. The President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, is more than willing to expand the FIFA World Cup to a 48-team tournament. The Governing Body hasagreed with his vision for a bigger tournament involving sixteen groups of three teams.
The top two teams in each group would advance into the knockout stages. The decision will be made in January but any changes to the currently used 32-team format is not likely to happen before 2026. FIFA’s council will discuss this happening at a meeting on the 9th.
The European Club Association, which represents the region’s leading clubs, has rejected the idea of an expanded World Cup at this point in time. Infantino also has made it clear that experiments could happen around video technology. Reffing at the recent Club World Cup has been very good and that he hopes the system could be used at the 2018 World Cup.
The system used to award a penalty in Kashima Antlers’ semi-final win over Atletico Nacional which alerted the referee by an assistant watching a monitor; however, there was some confusion when used in the other semi-final between Real Madrid and Club America when this technology was used.
