Eric Weddle Signs With Baltimore

After a few weeks of waiting, one of the top free agent is now off the market. The Baltimore Ravens have signed free safety Eric Weddle to a four year deal worth $26 million with $13 million guaranteed. Weddle spent the last nine seasons with the San Diego Chargers.

In 13 games last season, Weddle had 78 combined tackles, 0.5 sacks and 1 fumble recovery. In a losing season for the Chargers, Weddle put up decent numbers. Things went badly when the team fined him for conduct detrimental to the team, after Weddle decided to stay on the field and watch his daughter dance at halftime instead of going back to the locker room with the rest of the team. Weddle even skipped offseason workouts, due to him being disappointed about his current contract and the team not being willing to give him an extension.

The Ravens are getting a great piece to the secondary with the signing of Weddle. He is proven to be one of the best free safeties in the league right now. Weddle will help improve the secondary, which was filled with injuries last season.

It was time for a fresh start for Weddle, after a dreadful last season with the Chargers. Weddle is not getting the big payday that he wanted, but $26 million is a lot of money. Now he has to go out there and prove to the Ravens that he is worth all the money that the team paid to sign him. Weddle is joining a hungry Ravens team, who wants to get back to the playoff hunt after a depressing year last season.

In 2015, the Ravens went 5-11, their worst season (record wise) since the 2007 season under Brian Billick. With the addition of Weddle, it is very possible that he can minimize the amount of points opposing teams are able to receive.  As a team, the Ravens defense ranked 25th in the NFL when it came to points allowed per game with 20.5. Can Weddle revive his NFL career with this new contract? I am sure we are all awaiting that answer once the 2016 season hits us.
