Dodgers’ Outfielder Diagnosed With Torn ACL

Allow me to set the scene. 95 pitches for 20-year-old phenom, Julio Urias, no-hitting the Pittsburgh Pirates through 6. To leadoff the inning to continue it, he must retire former NL MVP Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has a 2-0 lead, and is dealing when McCutchen rips one to left field. Andrew Toles, playing with the shift, has one of the most improbable catches of the year; almost making the unbelievable catch when he slides and crashes into the Dodger Stadium wall. He exits the game, walking on his own power. Not even walking, simply, limping. Manager Dave Roberts takes out both Toles and Julio Urias while reliever Sergio Romo gives up the lead. The Dodgers eventual won 4-3 in extra innings.
But more importantly, outfielder Andrew Toles is one of the best feel good stories in the history of baseball. Almost forced out of the game, he’s worked his way to an everyday player and major part of the lineup for a World Series favorite. But for Toles, feel-good wasn’t the feeling of the night on May 9th, 2017 in Cali.
It has been confirmed via an MRI test that came back today, that Andrew Toles of the Los Angeles Dodgers has torn his ACL. So far in 2017, he’s hit a slashline of .271/.314/.772, with 5 homeruns in 96 at bats. He’s been an above average defender and brings a conundrum to Roberts’ and the Dodgers, as they must figure out how to replace Toles for likely the remainder of the season (and postseason).
The Athletes Hub wishes Andrew Toles the best of luck, and hopes for a speedy recovery on his way back to The Show. We’ll keep you posted.
