Detroit Lions Announce Rebranding

The Detroit Lions have announced that they will be undergoing a rebranding project, which entails that the team will eliminate the color black from their scheme. The team unveiled a new logo and typeface Wednesday morning on Twitter. Here’s the team’s official statement:
“The updated logo and new typeface revealed online this morning are elements of a full rebranding which includes the removal of black from our brand identity. The rebranding will culminate with the unveiling of all new uniforms on April 13th. Throughout the rebranding process, we made it a priority to emphasize our classic color combination of Honolulu blue and silver, which has been synonymous with the Detroit Lions since 1934. We are confident that our fans will respond well to the changes.”
The Lions revealed an all-black Color Rush jersey last year, but weren’t scheduled for a Color Rush game until the 2017 season. That jersey is also expected to change. The team is expected to introduce a modernized throwback uniform.
Black has been apart of the team’s color scheme since 2003. The Lions hinted at changes to the uniforms last year. Team president Rod Wood was quoted as saying:
“We are looking at an update, I would say, to our uniforms for the 2017 season, and I won’t get into too much detail about that. It won’t be a radical change. We still love the Honolulu blue and the silver and the lion. We have one of the greatest logos, I think, in the league. And great colors.”
