Dabo Swinney and Clemson agree on extension

The Clemson Tigers announced that they have signed head football coach Dabo Swinney to a six year contract extension. Multiple reports indicate the deal is worth $30.75 Million, with a $1M in retention bonues. This comes off the heels of Swinney leading the Tigers to the National Championship game, although they lost that game to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
“This new contract was important for us not only for what Dabo has accomplished in his eight seasons here but for what we know the program will continue to achieve — both on and off the field — for the foreseeable future,” athletic director Dan Radakovich said of the deal.
Swinney will earn $4.6M in base salary and the average annual value will increase slightly every year, maxing out at $5.65M in 2021. Should Swinney choose to leave Clemson, he’d owe the school $6M, which is higher than the $5M he would’ve owed in his previous contract.
“I’m excited and thankful for the opportunity to do what I love at such a great institution,” Swinney said in a release. “We’ve built a solid foundation of success and will continue to work toward our goals of preparing young men for their future and being successful in everything we do.”
Swinney was hired in 2008 on an interm basis but received the full time job. He’s lead the Tigers to a 75-27 overall record and a 47-14 ACC record.
