Crawford Designated For Assignment

On Sunday morning, the Los Angeles Dodgers made a move that I don’t believe anyone expected. The organization decided to select outfielder Carl Crawford for assignment. For this to happen, you know the franchise has hit rock bottom. 

For those who aren’t familiar with “designating players for assignment”, it essentially means that the Dodgers will have 10 days to trade, waive, release, or demote Crawford. With this move being made, the Dodgers reportedly called up C/IF Austin Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City. 

Why is this such big news? Take a look at his contract and how much he is owed currently. The 34-year old is bringing in $21.607 million this year, and will be owed $21.857 next season. 

A note to keep in mind is that even if the Dodgers got rid of Crawford, they would be responsible for picking up most of his contract in the future. No matter how the Dodgers play it out, they are losing a lot of money. 

In 2016, Crawford has a stat line of .185/.230/.235 with only a 30 OPS+. With Puig on the DL, the team will move forward with Trayce Thompson in right field, and work their way from there.
