Cowboys Rookie Maliek Collins Breaks Foot in OTAs
Collins is a defensive tackle for the team. He’s likely to start training camp on the unable to perform list. Collins can possibly return late in training camp or early in the preseason.
According to ESPN, Collins’ break is similar to Dez Bryant’s break last year. Collins had a screw inserted into the bone as well as a bone graft. The surgery seemed to be successful and Collins will be recovering. There’s no doubt the rookie will want to be back as soon as possible.
Collins was selected 67th overall by the Cowboys in an attempt to bolster their pass rush and maybe move Tyrone Crawford to defensive end. This move was made amidst Randy Gregory being suspended four games and Demarcus Lawrence possibly being punished in a similar way. Collins’ production in college for Nebraska slipped between 2014-2015. The slip was probably caused by a change in scheme.
The Cowboys are already without second round linebacker Jaylon Smith, likely for the year because of serious knee injury. They’ll be hoping Collins can recover and produce for them this year at some point.
Demarcus Lawrence also broke his foot during his rookie year and missed the first 7 games of the season. He had zero sacks in the regular season but had 2 in the playoffs during the Cowboys 2014 run. Collins is the only rookie not yet signed by the Cowboys, and the injury most likely won’t effect negotiations between the two parties.
