After a great afternoon of fights in Newark, New Jersey, the card ended with Colby Covington defeating Robbie Lawler by way of unanimous decision.
This win for Covington should be what gives him the next crack at the title that Kamaru Usman currently holds. Considering Lawler is a former Welterweight Champion, and Covington won the interim Welterweight title against Rafael Dos Anjos, this theory makes enough sense.
Covington has torn through opponents in Welterweight division en route to this opportunity to fight for the title. Both Covington and Usman have had alternations in the past, so the buildup to this bout is apparent.
Usman defeated Tyron Woodley back in March to become the undisputed Welterweight Champion. Since then, the topic of Usman vs Covington for the title has been relevant. With talks of fighting at Madison Square Garden in November, the Welterweight title may be up for grabs before the end of the year.
