Cousins Expected To Return To Washington

Per a familiar source involving ESPN, it has been reported that if Cousins and the Redskins do not come to an agreement involving a contract extension by March, the team will opt to use the franchise tag on the quarterback for the second time.

Cousins bet on himself in a make or break year this past season, and it’s paid off for him. In fact, multiple Redskins sources believe that Cousins has earned Andrew Luck-type money.

Cousins is currently being paid $19.95 million for the 2015 season, and if the team did franchise tag him, he would be paid $23.94 million in 2017. The Redskins QB became the second quarterback ever to play under the franchise tag, aside from Drew Brees in 2005 with the Chargers.

The same source also mentioned that the organization knows they can’t now allow Cousins to hit free agency, seeing that multiple franchises are in need of a franchise quarterback.

Cousins is fifth in the NFL when it comes to QBR, and has 3,540 yards and 20 TDs to his name this season. The Redskins would in fact be crazy to let Cousins go to free agency, although I don’t know if I’d be ready to commit to him with Andrew Luck-type numbers yet.
