Cormier-Jones Rematch is on….Again

According to UFC officials, the light heavyweight title rematch is back on between Daniel Cormier and Jon “Bones” Jones. The date for this bout is scheduled to take place at UFC 214 in Anaheim, California on July 29th. The announcement came during a news conference on Friday.

While the officials did not note if Cormier vs Jones would be the headline event, it wouldn’t come as a shock to anyone if it was. On the other hand, UFC President Dana White has voiced his concerns about trusting Jones with the responsibilities of headlining an event.

“I think that’s still undetermined,” Jones said. “I don’t really see what would be a bigger fight over Daniel and I, but if Dana wants to stick to his guns and make me a co-main to prove a point — ultimately, I think he’ll end up losing more money doing that.”

Combined, Jones (22-1) and Cormier (19-1) could be one of the best fights of the year that the UFC can provide. For those who don’t know the history between these two athletes, Jones first defeated Cormier in defense of the light heavyweight belt in January of 2015. Later that year, Jones was stripped of his belt by the UFC for legal reasoning.

A rematch between the two was scheduled in April of 2016, but Cormier was forced to pull out, due to an injury. The rematch was then pushed to July 9th at UFC 200, but Jones was pulled due to a failed drug test.

Will Jones be able to stay clean and take back the title that he once owned? Will Cormier be able to prove why he is the best in his division? This fight has the potential to one of the greater ones, so it will be interesting to see how this develops.
